Avoid These Mistakes When Downsizing to a Smaller Home
As a veteran, you have had a life full of adventure and amazing stories while you protected our country against threats both foreign and domestic. But now, you are likely thinking about how you can take it easy in your later years and downsize to a smaller home. While this is a great idea, if you do not take the time to properly plan your move, then you could be in for a struggle. Realtor Brian Chandler of RE/MAX Alliance wants to help our heroes in any way he can, so he has a list of common mistakes that you will want to avoid while planning your big move.
Not Considering the Housing Market
You may be in a hurry to get rid of your current home and get to your downsized property, but while you may be excited, you also need to have a plan. First, NerdWallet notes that you will want to look at home values in your area and determine if this is a good time to sell your current home. If it isn’t, then you may consider renting out that house for now while you go to the new place.
You will also need to think carefully about where you want your new home to be. Again, you will need to look at the housing market and the prices in your preferred destination to make sure it is something you can afford. It is a good idea to hire a reputable real estate agent like Brian Chandler who can help you navigate the process.
Not Decluttering
Another mistake that many people make when moving is forgetting exactly how much goes into getting your belongings from point A to B. You will likely be surprised at how much stuff you have in your home so go room by room and make a list. You may not even want to keep everything you have. If there are clothes, furniture, or other items that you no longer want, consider donating them. That way, you will have less to move.
It may be hard to get rid of the precious items that you have compiled over a well-lived lifetime, but if you want to make the downsizing process easier then you will need to let go. Stored says to look at your closet. Is there anything in there that you haven’t worn in the last year? If there is, you probably won’t wear it again. Also, look through all of your kitchen cabinets and the nightstands in your bedroom. If you don’t use certain items, consider bringing them to Goodwill or the Salvation Army.
Trying to Do It All Yourself
Although there is no denying that you are a hero, there isn’t any reason to hurt yourself physically or mentally by trying to do everything yourself in regards to your move. In addition to the real estate agent, consider hiring a moving company to help you out. However, you shouldn’t just pick a name out of the phonebook.
Instead, do your homework by searching online for movers in your area. While searching, look at their past customer reviews and look for a respectable business. Then, request a quote and see if it is something you can afford. If you can, have the moving company come to your house beforehand to inventory what you have so they can give you a valid price.
Forgetting About the Pets
Do you own any pets? If you do, then you’ll need to have a plan for how to move them as well. In addition to your dog or cat, you will also have to move all of their beds, food, toys, and more. You’ll also need to consider the temperament of your pet. Many dogs tend to get nervous in new situations, so consider purchasing a dog-proof trash can to protect him and your new home, as a nervous dog may start acting out by going through the trash.
As you can see, there is a lot to consider when moving and downsizing to a smaller home. Consider the tips above – including researching the housing market, decluttering, hiring a trusted real estate agent, and taking your pets into consideration – and make the process easy and relaxing.
